Why Your GBP Matters More Than You Think
Google Business Profile is the #1 free lead generation tool for local contractors. Done right, it puts you in the "map pack" — the 3 business listings that appear above organic results for local searches. That position alone can be worth thousands of dollars a month in leads.
Most contractors set it up once and forget it. Here are 7 things you're probably missing.
1. You Haven't Selected the Right Primary Category
"General Contractor" is too broad. Be specific: "Pressure Washing Service," "Electrician," "Roofing Contractor." Google uses this to match you with searches. Pick the most specific category that fits your main service.
2. Your Description Doesn't Include Your City
Your GBP description should mention your city (or cities) naturally. "We provide concrete services in Seguin, TX and surrounding areas of Guadalupe County" tells Google exactly where you operate.
3. You're Not Using the Services Section
GBP lets you list individual services with descriptions. Fill these out completely. Each service is another chance to appear for a relevant search.
4. You Don't Have Enough Photos
Google recommends at least 10 photos. Businesses with 100+ photos get 520% more calls than average. Upload job photos regularly. Before/after shots perform especially well.
5. You're Not Responding to Reviews
Every review — positive or negative — deserves a response. It signals you're an active, engaged business. And your response to a negative review is read by every potential customer who sees it.
6. You're Not Using Google Posts
GBP lets you post updates, offers, and announcements. These appear directly in your listing. Post once a week. It takes 5 minutes and signals to Google that you're an active business.
7. Your Hours Aren't Updated
If your hours are wrong or missing, Google may show a "hours may differ" warning that kills trust. Keep them accurate, and update them for holidays.
